MEXICO 1986

Winners Argentina 3-2 against West Germany

The third straight new format at an event which originally was supposed to take place in Colombia saw Argentina prevail in an entertaining competition highlighted by the glory and disgrace of Diego Maradona and the best World Cup game ever between France and Brazil.

Danish dynamite starred for the first time in the first round along with Soviet skill, but the early favorites fell by the wayside in the round of 16, 5-1 to Spain and 4-3 to Belgium respectively.

Also noteworthy were undisciplined Uruguayians who were under threat of expulsion after a flood of red cards before losing 1-0 to Argentina in the round of 16.

In the quarterfinals Maradona beat England 2-1, first striking with what now is known as "the hand of god" and then with an amazing 60-metre solo.

France and Brazil delighted with plenty of skill in a heartbreaker Brazil lost on penalties while Germany yet again underlined their role as tournament team with a penalty shootout success against Mexico.

They then put together their best game of the tournament for a second straight semifinal win over France, 2-0, because they had Michel Platini on the leash brilliantly.

Maradona did away with Belgium with two further goals in the other semi. Argentina were unstoppable in the final and Maradona proud to hold the Cup aloft afterwards, but the Germans with their new coach Franz Beckenbauer went down fighting.

Rudi Voeller and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge made up a 2-0 deficit in the final 17 minutes, but just as they were pressing for the winner, Maradona fed Jorge Burruchaga shortly before the final whistle for the final 3-2 score.

This tournament also saw the birth of the now world famous "Mexican Wave".
