FRANCE 1998

Winners France 3-0 against Brazil

The whole of Brazil was in shock when Ronaldo's name didn't appear on the team sheet for the first ever dream final between the defending champion and the host team.

The superstar did play after all amid plenty of confusion but the French were unstoppable on the night and picked up their first World Cup title, 3-0 with two goals from Zinedine Zidane.

France had also opened the campaign a month earlier with a 3-0 win, against South Africa.

Brazil, by contrast, struggled to a 2-1 win over Scotland in the tournament opener and were never fully convincing.

The three-time winners Germany fared even worse and crashed 3-0 in the quarter-finals against stunning novices Croatia who eventually finished third.

Italy lost for the third time in a row on penalties, in the quarter-finals against France and Africa again failed to reach the closing stages.

The inspired Dutch beat Argentina on a stunning late goal from Dennis Bergkamp but then missed out on their first World Cup title yet again when they lost a semi-final shootout against Brazil.

Argentina and England played a round 16 thriller in which David Beckham was sent off, Michael Owen scored a sensational goal, but the South Americans won on penalties.

But the best match of the tournament was Brazil's 3-2 quarterfinal win over Denmark in a gripping encounter in Nantes
