Steven Gerrard admits he will be joining every England fan in keeping his fingers crossed that Wayne Rooney stays fit for the World Cup.
Rooney caused a brief scare for England coach Fabio Capello earlier this week when he revealed he has been suffering from a knee injury that may have forced him to miss Wednesday's friendly against Egypt at Wembley.
The Manchester United forward eventually declared himself fit after scans showed the problem was nothing more serious than bruising and he will start against the African Nations Cup holders.
Gerrard, acting captain in the absence of new skipper Rio Ferdinand, knows England's hopes of winning the World Cup for the first time since 1966 rest largely on Rooney's ability to maintain his current breathtaking form.
The former Everton star has scored 28 goals in all competitions this season, including Sunday's League Cup final winner against Aston Villa, prompting Gerrard to describe him as the best player in the world.
With England lacking any other world-class attackers, the Liverpool midfielder concedes it is essential that Rooney is fit for the finals in South Africa.
Asked how much of a blow it would be if Rooney was injured, Gerrard said: "What does that say about the rest of us! But I understand why people ask about Wayne. The form he is in it is vital we keep Wayne fit.
"I suppose everyone will have their fingers cross that he is fit and in form going into the World Cup. On current form he is the best player in the world.
"I hope he can stay fit for England. Obviously his form this season has been special. I agree with (United manager) Alex Ferguson he is now in that bracket of world-class top players.
"From England's point of view if he can continue that form until the World Cup he is going to be a key player for us."
