Australia's prime target is to host the 2018 World Cup, with the 2022 bid as an alternative objective, Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy said Monday.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd officially launched Australia's bid to host either the 2018 or the 2022 World Cups in Canberra on Sunday.

Australia is one of nine bidders for 2018, and one of 11 in the race for 2022.

Lowy said he was not deterred by England's early favouritism and confirmed Australia's prime objective was the 2018 event, with 2022 a possible second prize.

Football's world body FIFA will decide in December 2010 who hosts both showpieces, but no continent can get two in a row.

South Africa is hosting next year's event with Brazil staging the 2014 World Cup.

"We are concentrating on 2018," Lowy told the National Press Club in Canberra. "Our objective at the moment is absolute and total.

"We have a very good chance and we are going to go for it.

"We are single-minded but not stupid. In case we slip, we have another chance at 2022." Lowy said the Asian region, from which Australia now qualifies for the event, had only hosted one World Cup -- Japan/South Korea in 2002 -- and Australia was the only continent not to have held the tournament.

The biggest television audience for the World Cup, by far, was in Asia, not in Europe or America, he said.

Australia are among nine bidders, along with Belgium-Netherlands, England, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Portugal-Spain, Russia and the United States, for the 2018 World Cup.

The same nine bidders are also in the running for the 2022 World Cup, along with Qatar and South Korea.
