Spain's coach Vicente del Bosque on Friday recalled Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas to the squad for the first matches of its World Cup qualifying group against Bosnia and Armenia.
But there was no place for Real Madrid's Raul, the leading all-time scorer for the national side with 44 goals but who was sidelined under previous coach Luis Aragones, or Barcelona's teen sensation Bojan Krkic.
Spain hosts Bosnia on September 6 and then Armenia four days later.
Group Five also includes Belgium, Estonia and Turkey Del Bosque announced 20 players for the two matches, most of whom were part of the squad for the Euro 2008 tournament, which was won by Spain.
Fabregas returns from injury, and Seville's Diego Capel and Athletic Bilbao's defender Andoni Iraola, who were called up for a friendly against Denmark this month, keep their places.
Del Bosque kept Liverpool's Fernando Torres, Valencia's David Villa and Fenerbahce's Daniel Guiza in attack.
Explaining the absence of Raul, he said the decision was "purely sports-related. We take the best players on form and there are no other factors" involved.
