One of the most senior members of the 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee, Dennis Mumble on Thursday resigned.
Mumble, one of the most respected soccer administrations in South Africa citing personal reasons for leaving his post as 2010 World Cup Chiefs Competitions Officer which he has held since for 2010 LOC was formed in 2006 when South Africa won the bid to host the biggest event on the world soccer calendar.
The 2010 LOC chief executive officer, Danny Jordaan was stunned by the resignation of his friend and who he had worked closely with for the past 18 years.
Mumble who was an exile in the United States returned after independence and was appointed as general manager of the South Africa Football Association before accepting the post of manager of Soccer City in the late 1990 and early 2000.
Said Jordaan: “Mumble is a bright and intelligent soccer administrator who I have worked closely with since 1990.
“He has made a tremendous contribution to soccer administration in this country and also made a huge contribution to the 2010 LOC.
“I am saddened by his resignation but I respect his reasons of personal issues he has to deal with and wish him well.”
Jordaan said that a replacement for Mumble would be made as a matter of urgency. Mumble was responsible for organising and co-coordinating all soccer events leading up to the World Cup finals.
He would have played a key role in the organising of the Confederations Cup to be hosted in South Africa from June next year. The Confederations cup is used as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup.
The Confederations Cup involves the six continental champions, world champs Italy and hosts South Africa over three weeks.
