Sunderland boss Roy Keane signed teenage Irish midfielder David Meyler from Cork City for an undisclosed fee on Friday.
Meyler agreed a three-year contract and could make his debut for the Black Cats against Cobh Ramblers in Ireland on Monday.
The 19-year-old, who follows former Cork team-mate Roy O'Donovan in making the move to the Stadium of Light, said: "I'm here to succeed.
My ambition is to break into the first team as soon as I can. I want to do it here, and hopefully I can."
Meyler, believed to have cost around 160,000 pounds (202,000 euros), can't wait to prove himself to Keane - like Meyler a native of Cork, southwest Ireland.
He said: "Roy Keane is a legend where I come from. Everyone grew up watching him play and that included me." smg/ea08
