Sunderland signed veteran Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Nick Colgan on a free transfer on Thursday.
Colgan, 34, agreed a one-year deal with Roy Keane's Premier League side after being released by Ipswich at the end of last season.
The former Chelsea and Hibernian stopper, who has won nine caps for Ireland, will understudy Scotland international Craig Gordon at the Stadium of Light.
"It's a huge challenge which I'm really looking forward to," Colgan said.
"I got the call from the gaffer and he gave me 24 hours to think about it, but I think it took me about 24 seconds to decide!"
