Electricity supply problems are eroding public confidence in SA’s ability to host a successful 2010 Soccer World Cup, according to a quarterly survey by African Response.

The survey found that only 36% of respondents from the large urban areas believed SA would meet its electricity demands in 2010. This is a 16% drop since January reports Business Day.

Confidence dropped 2% nationally, with the biggest dip recorded in Johannesburg, the country’s economic hub, where confidence was down 12%.

Researchers believe that negativity could be the highest in Johannesburg because that is where factors such as power cuts, petrol price increases, and recent interest rate hikes are most felt.

Durban was the most confident city, with 82% of residents saying they believed the country would be ready, against 70% in Johannesburg, 74% in Pretoria and 59% in Cape Town.

The survey found that, overall, 76% of South Africans believed that the airports would be ready to cope with the influx of visitors.

When it came to SA’s roads, Johannesburg residents were the most positive, with 74% saying they felt roads would be ready , followed by Durban, which moved up 4% to 72%, Pretoria with 59% and Cape Town moving down 8% to 43%.

Confidence in the readiness of public transport remained constant at 63%.

Almost all South Africans feel less secure compared to the January survey.

Pretoria saw an 11% drop in confidence to 42%, Cape Town was down 2% to 39%, and Johannesburg was down 4% to 62%.

However, Durban saw a 14% improvement, with 74% saying they were confident in policing and security.

South Africans were less confident that telecommunications infrastructure or information technology would be ready. They were also not as sure that restaurants across the country would be ready.

They were, however, more confident in the country’s ability to deliver stadiums, with 70% saying they believed they would be completed in time, 1% up from January.

While 77% of those surveyed felt the games were relevant to their lives, it was 5% less than in January.

The 25-to-34 age group felt the games were most important to them on a personal level.

The survey noted that confidence in SA’s ability to host the World Cup decreased as income increased.

One area where there was a national increase was with regard to Bafana Bafana’s readiness, with an increase in confidence from 48% to 51% in the past four months.

Researchers said it would be interesting to see what effect Carlos Alberto Parreira’s resignation as Bafana Bafana’s coach had on public optimism in future surveys.
