Johannesburg - Qualified and experienced tour operators around the world have been given an opportunity to benefit from the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

They will be able to provide tour packages comprising accommodation, transport, and match tickets.

Speaking during the opening of the FIFA Tour Operator Programme launched on Monday, Chairman of the FIFA Ticketing Sub-Committee, David Will said FIFA would allocate a number of match tickets for use in a tour operator programme.

Events management company, Management, Accommodation, Ticketing, Computer Solutions and Hospitality (MATCH) has been appointed by FIFA to administer the programme on its behalf.

Mr Will said the programme would allow qualified and experienced travel companies to provide accommodation, transportation and other related travel services in travel packages of their own creation, together with tickets sold on behalf of FIFA.

"The goal of the programme is to facilitate safe and effective travel to the matches for the largest possible number of fans and make the best use of available accommodation, ground and air transportation facilities.

"Tour operators who qualify for the programme will receive a license to use an authenticating mark to demonstrate to the public that the tour operator is offering travel packages that include valid tickets," Mr Will explained.

He encouraged operators to register their interest in the programme online www.touroperator.match-ag.com, prior to the commencement of the application phase to ensure that they have up-to-date information about the programme.

Environmental Affairs and Tourism Minister, Marthinus van Schalkwyk said the excitement within the tourism industry was evident.

"This is a further step towards ensuring that the benefits of the world cup are felt by all sectors of the business community from multinational companies to family businesses.

"The world cup provides a unique opportunity for South Africa's tourism industry, which is currently ranked as one of the most important economic drivers in the country," said Mr van Schalkwyk.

SA Tourism Chief Executive Officer, Moeketsi Mosola said Tourism South Africa will work closely with MATCH to provide valuable information and make sure that the operators are supported with every package.

"We will provide familiarisation trips for operators to have a deeper understanding of the country, provide online support with the information for customers to be empowered and provide in country workshop to improve the knowledge and products that are available in South Africa so that they will be able to sell as many tickets," said Mr Mosola.
