Provincial Culture, Sport and Recreation MEC, Jabu Mahlangu, said
the completion date of the Mbombela Stadium, outside Nelspruit, was May 15, 2009.
"All is going well. Rest assured that come 15 May, 2009, the stadium will be declared ready by FIFA," he told reporters this week.
MEC Mahlangu mentioned the department's plans ahead of the World Cup.
He said the department was busy finalising the appointment of a Director for the World Cup and a one-stop co-ordinating office would also be opened soon to handle all World Cup matters.
Matches at school level will be held to identify local soccer talent ahead of the games.
Public viewing sites are also to be set up in each of the province's three districts namely Nkangala, Ehlanzeni and Gert Sibande to allow people who cannot afford to go to the games to watch them on big screens.
"These sites will be used in the build-up towards 2010 and will be used to establish a fan base in all three districts," said MEC Mahlangu.
Mpumalanga, Mozambique and Swaziland will provide practice fields and bases for foreign players in 2010.
The province will also host some of the Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) games later this year.
Altogether 14 southern African countries participate in the games.
The Soccer World Cup will kick-off on June 11, 2010 and end on July 11, 2010. -
