Port Elizabeth - The annual Vodacom Challenge tournament to be held in Port Elizabeth will be an opportunity to test the city's capacity to provide security and crowd controlling systems during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The host city will be home to a match between country's two top teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates during the Vodacom Challenge.

The Soweto giants will be battling it out on Thursday in a bid to salvage pride, satisfy thousands of soccer fanatics and to win the Vodacom Challenge title.

"The match will provide the city with an opportunity to test its systems and structures with a view towards the World Cup readiness.

"The Vodacom Challenge match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, which will take place on 26 July 2007," the Eastern Cape Provincial Government said.

The Naturena boys, uncharacteristic of defending champions, got off on a bad start after being walloped 2:1 by the visiting Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend.

In preparation for the game this week, the Department of Safety and Liaison has put measures in place to ensure that the match is remembered only as 90 minutes of flair, style and amazing goals.

These measures include the coordination of all role-players in the security environment.

This will include the police, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality, Provincial Traffic Services, the National Prosecuting Authority, stadium management, private risk management and security services deployed by the PSL and Emergency and Disaster Management Services.

Senior police members will be deployed and delegated to coordinate all safety related issues for the event.

These senior officers have been drawn from South African Police Service Provincial Office and a number of the police stations operating within the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Area.

Key members will include:

* Commanders of the Venue Operations Centre, Assistant Commissioner Ntswahlana;
* Commander of ground personnel: Assistant Commissioner Kapp;
* Commander of stadium perimeters, Director Jongile;
* 2010 Designated Football Officer and convener of safety planning meetings for the Vodacom Challenge, Director Koll; and
* 2010 Designated Football Officer, Director Nxabela

The breakdown of commissioned officers which will be available on the day are 12 Captains, 14 Superintendents, 8 Senior Superintendents and 7 Directors

Further to this, the extensive deployment of 222 police personnel will increase visibility in and around the stadium.

A mobile police station will be operating during the game and detective services will be on standby to enable speedy reporting and the investigation of cases.

Other role-players which will contribute to the manpower would be the 30 traffic officers, 557 private security personnel and 150 metro members.

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality is intimately involved in the preparations of the event through its Safety and Security Division and its 2010 Office.

The planning for the event has covered issues such as traffic congestion, entrance to and exit from the stadium, securing of vehicles parked outside of the venue during the event and pedestrian traffic to and from the event.

Also, the security plan for the participating teams is in place to ensure their safety from their time of arrival in the city, at their practice grounds, in their journeys to and from the game up until their departure.

"The extensive cooperation between all safety and security role players during preparations for the Vodacom Challenge is a clear sign that the Eastern Cape Province has the capability to host an event of this nature and that the 2010 World Cup will be an outstanding success," the department said. -
