The 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee South Africa (LOC) has congratulated Issa Hayatou on his appointment as the first African chair of the FIFA World Cup Organising Committee (OC).

Mr Hayatou is the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and has also worked on the International Olympic Committee for a number of years.

"We welcome the appointment of Issa Hayatou and we are very happy that he is the first African chairperson of FIFA's World Cup OC," said Danny Jordaan, the chief executive officer of the 2010 FIFA World Cup LOC.

"We have worked well with Mr Hayatou for many years and we look forward to strengthening that relationship even more as we host the FIFA World Cup in 2010."

Mr Hayatou is also an accomplished sportsman in his own right.

Before joining the administrative side of sport, he was a champion athlete in the 400m and 800m races between 1964 and 1971, played basketball at national level for Cameroon and played university football.

By 1965 Mr Hayatou played soccer at the highest level for his country, as a member of the Cameroonian national team at the first All Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo.

The LOC further extended its sincere condolences to the family of International Cricket Council President Percy Sonn, who passed away at the weekends.

Mr Sonn died aged 57, following an operation to stop the colon cancer he had been diagnosed with, shortly after the Cricket World Cup.

"Percy was instrumental in the promotion of unity in South African cricket. He was also a member of the South African Council on Sport and played a big role in normalising South African sport.

"His passing is a big loss for South African sport and cricket in particular," said Mr Jordaan.

Mr Sonn was a former deputy director of public prosecutions and will be remembered for his passion for justice and the outstanding role he played in the management and unification of cricket.

He was also the first African to head the ICC and worked tirelessly to ensure that cricket continued to play its entertaining and unifying role to humanity, President Thabo Mbeki said earlier this week.

Mr Sonn is survived by his wife Sandra, a daughter and two sons, as well as his mother, six brothers and a sister.
