A delegation of young, South African entrepreneurs from the hospitality industry are attending a FIFA congress in Zurich, Switzerland on Friday, ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

The delegation, including eight entrepreneurs from the hospitality industry and five officials from the Gauteng Provincial Government, will gain knowledge on how to host high profile international guests.

"The Gauteng Provincial Government has committed itself to growing our domestic competitive football industry, as part of our overall economic growth strategy," said Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Barbara Creecy, Thursday.

The group will work alongside officials from "Match", the international company that handles all FIFA's international travel, accommodation, ticketing and information technology needs.

"The FIFA Match skills transfer mission will help us by giving young entrepreneurs the relevant experience in the hospitality industry to allow us to better take advantage of the opportunities offered by hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup," said MEC Creecy.

"Government officials accompanying the group will ensure skills transfer to others when the group returns."

The FIFA Match skills transfer partnership will continue for three years and offer young people from Gauteng the following opportunities:

* gaining event management experience in preparation for 2010 at a working level;
* involving Gauteng residents in an international FIFA event in a foreign environment; and
* demonstrating that hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup will provide meaningful empowerment and skills transfer.

Skills development and enhancement is a vital part of the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA) and its skills component - the Joint Initiative for Priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA).

AsgiSA aims to achieve 6 percent annual economic growth by 2010 and halve poverty and unemployment by 2014.

JIPSA is aimed at securing and developing the skills required to realise AsgiSA's aims.

The boost in the country's tourism levels, as well as its knock-on effect on hotel accommodation, shows that the hospitality industry is moving confidently towards the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

Overall growth in tourism's contribution to the South African economy has had positive effect on hotel performance.

Statistics show that international visitor arrivals, from primary markets in the United States of America, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, India, Canada and Africa, have continued to grow with a 13.4 percent increase recorded for the period January to October 2006.

Locally the demand has also increased significantly and overall occupancies of 71 percent were attained in 2006, while the national average room rates increased by 12 percent and yields have grown by 15 percent.
