Cape Town - Government is to hold a two-day indaba with the South African Football Association (Safa) on the technical aspects of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup.

The indaba, to be hosted sometime this year, would continue government's discussions with the independent body, said Deputy Minister of Sport, Gert Oosthuizen on Tuesday, at a briefing on the education, labour and sport elements of government's social cluster for the year ahead.

"We've had discussions with them [Safa] on the way forward on what should be done," the deputy minister said.

He explained that in collaboration with the Department of Education, school children were being prepared and developed to possibly take part in the 2010 World Cup and the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.

Challenges in this regard included funding, access to facilities and the availability of trainers for the pupils.

"We need to make sure that the facilities that are currently under-utilized are made available to children," said the deputy minister, adding that this was compounded by the difficulties of transporting children to sport facilities if their own schools had none.

"If there are no facilities, then there is nowhere for them to train and participate in sport. Another challenge is to also help communities to gain access, not just schools."

Regarding the availability of trainers, Mr Oosthuizen said about 20 000 coaches were currently being trained to increase the capacity available to school sport programmes.

It was also suggested that past matriculants and undergraduate students dedicate some of their free time towards training pupils at their former high schools and primary schools.

This would help to increase the variety of sport activities available to the youngsters, as well as the number of coaches available to train them.

Education Minister Naledi Pandor, who chaired the briefing, urged for the return of Physical Training commonly known as "PT".

She also recommended a system used in some countries where schools in the same education district would share a single, centrally located sports complex, if none of the schools had their own fields and facilities.

The minister also suggested the development of sport leagues within these districts to identify future sports stars.

"The school districts should have run-off leagues against each other where the schools could compete, to help us find the next Lucas Radebes," Ms Pandor said.
