The senior police officer leading security planning for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa is to deliver a keynote address at the influential International Sports Security Summit at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, London on Thursday.

André Pruis, Deputy National Commissioner for Operational Services of the South African Police Service, heads the country's Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure, responsible for the coordination of operational functions between various Government Departments, including the Police SA National Defence Force, Intelligence Community, Justice, Correctional Services and others.

FIFA's decision to take their showcase event to South Africa was driven by the personal commitment of president Sepp Blatter to an African World Cup and Andrew Pruis and his team have a critical role in ensuring that the event delivers on its potential for players, officials and spectators form the host nation and 31 visiting countries.

Although 2010 will be South Africa's first FIFA World Cup, the country has significant experience in hosting major event and Andre Pruis has been central to the success of many of them. He has worked on events including Rugby World Cup 1995, the All African Games of 1999 and the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup as well as a series of major non-sports events.

"We are absolutely delighted to have such a high profile speaker address the International Sports Security Summit," said Nigel Rushman, managing director of organisers Rushmans.

"His wealth of experience gives him a unique perspective on the myriad issues around staging the FIFA World Cup in his home country and we are looking forward to sharing his insight."

The International Sports Security Summit is at London's Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre on Wednesday January 24 and Thursday January 25.

It brings together one of the strongest speaker line-ups ever assembled to discuss and share knowledge in the specialist and increasingly important area of security at major sports events.
