Substitute Tim Cahill was the hero for Australia as the Socceroos came from behind and scored three times in eight minutes to beat Japan 3-1 in Kaiserslautern and record their first ever win in the World Cup finals.
Australia were behind at half-time after Japan's Shunsuke Nakamura scored a goal in the 26th minute. Then when Cahill came on the opening match of group F turned and Cahill put the scores level with a goal in the 84th minute.
Cahill then fired a spectacular shot in the 89th minute scoring his second goal putting Australia ahead for the first time. Then to cap it off two minutes into added time John Aloisi scored Australia's third.
Australia won the match 3-0.
